The historical and cultural city of Warangal is on a fast track of growth and prosperity.
Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation is committed to this endeavor by providing high
quality civic services to its citizens. As part of its efforts, it strives to improve the sanitation on a
mission mode through provision of Household toilets, public and community toilets, public
urinals, sludge management, school sanitation, and awareness creation about sanitation,
hygiene and health.
Sanitation generally refers to the provision of facilities and services for the safe disposal of
human urine and faeces. A lack of sanitation and hygiene contributes to a range of health and
environmental problems, the resulting sickness causes suffering, and loss of opportunities to
earn a living or gain an education. Improving sanitation is known to have a significant beneficial
impact on health both in households and across communities. The word 'sanitation' also refers
to the maintenance of hygienic conditions.
Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) is providing knowledge support to the Greater
Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) implementing “City Wide Delivery of Sustainable and
Equitable Sanitation Services in Warangal” with the support of Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation (BMGF) and the Department for International Development (DfID).
The key areas of improvement identified are improved septage/fecal sludge management
covering regulatory framework, emptying, transportation, treatment and disposal, provision of
public toilets, open defecation free(ODF) & ODF+ and slum sanitation improvement in about 5
pilot slums including community and individual toilets, WASH in schools, DEWATS for waste
water, capacity building, IEC and establishing M&E systems.
